Paper Circle today is a vibrant non-profit organization, located on the historic, starbrick-lined square of Nelsonville. Our spacious northern-lit gallery houses six exhibitions annually. Behind the gallery we have a shop in which we feature an assortment of handmade papers and paste papers, journals, cards, and other objects of art created in our studio. Our sunny studio, located in back, is complete with a Hollander beater, 2 presses and numerous vats and dryers. In the basement we have our O-Gami operation and our pulp spraying room.
In addition to hosting six annual exhibits, we also offer year-round community workshops taught either by exhibiting, visiting, or Paper Circle resident artists. We also host a yearly Changing Artist Program in which accomplished artists from other media are invited to the studio to spend a year exploring the possibilities of paper. Unpaid staff includes volunteers and Ohio University print majors, to whom we provide credits in exchange for studio assistance. Our major outreach program, Circle for Kids, takes place in the summer. In response to the lack of art education in the school for grades K-8, Paper Circle provides the underserved area youth a summer of learning through the arts. In addition to providing an effective semester’s worth of measured arts learning, Paper Circle generates over 70 thousand dollars in income for area artist/teachers, and staff.
