On Tuesdays ACVNA will conduct wellness activities at Stuart’s Opera House. The musical theater presentation will occur at the Stuart’s Opera House on July 18.  The gallery opening for families and the public will take place at Stuart’s Opera House and Paper Circle during the Final Fridays event, a regional art walk attended by up to 800 hundred local, regional and out of town guests. The shows will remain on exhibit until August 24.

Program Overview
72 elementary and middle-school students enrolled (ages 8-14) from the Nelsonville-York City School District will be divided into groups, and by the end of five weeks, each will have experienced classes in the following: painting; paper and book-making; printing; ceramics; signature skateboard design; theater arts; dance & movement, and music. Groups come together for lunches, PE, VNA training and final presentations to the public.

Culinary Arts
In concert with The Appalachian Nutritional Network, and The First United Methodist Church, hot, nutritious meals are prepared on-site daily for all program participants in our new culinary/nutrition program pilot. In this pilot, 4 high schoolers under the supervision a certified home economics instructor, transform locally grown food into hot, nutritious, USDA approved lunches for everyone in the program. The 4 will be offered continued employment opportunity at the local food bank. Lunches will be served for an additional three weeks after programming ends. The icing on the cake for our culinary students will be to prepare and decorate cakes under the direction of Atira parker, professional baker, to serve at the theatre performance to the children and their families.

Wellness Activites
ACVNA will provide 5 staff including a registered nurse, social worker, dietician, physical therapist, and Marketing Director to present innovative, interactive lessons in health and well being. Activities will include growth charts, nutrition pyramids, demonstrations including vital signs and therapy equipment as well as creative health games. Phys Ed in the park will be offered daily, with organized games such as golf, pong ball, parachutes, baseball, paddle ball, and more. The City of Nelsonville has provided participants with an all-day Friday pool pass.

Multimedia Marketing
Another group of 3 high schoolers and Hocking College Students, facilitated by their teacher Jim Murray, PhD, will be paid to work in an empowering, hands-on, multi-media arts class in which they will explore local resources and create all the program’s promotional materials, including press releases, advertisements, programs, news articles, and video and audio documentation.

High School Internships
Five more of our program graduates (current high school students) have been chosen based on past participation, interest and skill, to move into paid studio assistant positions where they will help teachers with material preparation and class execution. This furthers their skills and knowledge and provides continued nurturance, exposure, and opportunity to explore their own potential as artists.

Family Involvement
Another important program goal concerns not only the children, but the effect this program has upon their parents and families.  Because the art opening and theatre performance will both be performed at Stuart’s Opera House at the end of the season, families have a direct opportunity to regale in their children’s accomplishments, appreciate a personal pride from their child’s project, and have a greater opportunity to connect more intimately to the rest of the community.
